In summary, the issues presented for this project were essentially logistical – delivering training to a large number of widespread individuals and a work force that is predominantly out in the field and therefore difficult to assemble in one place. It is difficult and time-consuming to keep them apprised of changes in practices or familiarising them with new products. Finally, the current methods, if supplemented by the use of dynamic web and multimedia technologies, allow for a much more measurable process, where individuals not meeting required quality standards can be easily identified and the value of the productivity and training improvements can be measured.
The solution was deployed in mid-2005 and has been very successful in providing a new and powerful method to train field service engineers throughout the UK in a unified manner. The courses created cover critical health and safety information relating to electrical safety, PAT testing and academic improvement courses.
Results to date from the training materials indicate a significant return on investment and a saving in time, money and improved knowledge retention of staff. Moreover, results from training have also indicated areas within the course where additional, more detailed information would result in better assessment scores allowing trainers to concentrate on improving the training courses rather than travelling all over the UK.
